This page shows some images that have been edited using "FastStone" software to reinterpret composition, colours and textures of original portfolio images.
It may reasonably be argued that this is moving away from the pure art of the photographic image to a different art form facilitated by advances in technology. 
I was motivated to try this as a result of some images shown at a recent photographic group meeting.  
Exploring different post production methods is another step along the pathway of developing an artistic style?
